MAXIMIZING Metabolic Rate
Metabolism is the combination of all bio chemical processes in the body resulting in overall homeostasis of the body’s cells. Metabolism can be summarized as the net result of 2 major processes in the body: Anabolism and Catabolism. One involves synthesis while the other involves breakdown.
Obesity is a BIG problem in this country and the #1 question I usually get is this:
"My weight has been fluctuating for the past 10 years. I lose weight and then a month later bring it back on as fast as it left. Is something wrong with my metabolism?"
The answer to this question is not so simple. An abnormal metabolism is rarely the culprit, although in rare cases some diseases do alter metabolic rate significantly. The problem with weight fluctuation is consistency and body composition. Let me tell you what I mean.
When you lost 30 pounds it was probably because you willed yourself to stop eating, maybe even by starving yourself. The problem here is that when you lost weight initially you lost fat but also lean body tissue as well. When you regained the weight you increased fat % while lean body mass % stayed low. This cycle results in a slower metabolism since Lean tissue is more active metabolically than fat tissue even during rest.
Moreover, by starving yourself the body will breakdown muscle which is metabolically VERY active, even at rest and conserve energy in fat.
The ANSWER lies in a BALANCE between decreased caloric intake, strength training, and proper physical fitness. It is actually more complicated than that. However, if you stay moving and stay physically fit you will boost your metabolism naturally and allow for a diet that actually lasts more than a few months.
